Medicine Looks at Alcoholics Anonymous; Reprints of papers presented to the Medical Society of the State of New York and the American Psychiatric Association. This pamphlet was printed in 1949 by Works Publishing, Inc.

This pamphlet includes transcriptions of papers/talks presented to the American Psychiatric Association by Harry Tiebout in May 1943 and to The Medical Society of the State of New York by Bill W. in May 1944.

Here is an excerpt of Bill’s talk titled “BASIC CONCEPTS OF ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS”:

“ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS is an informal fellowship of about 12,000* former alcoholic men and women who are to be found banded together as groups in about 325 American and Canadian communities, these groups ranging in size from half a dozen to many hundreds in individuals. Our oldest members have been sober eight to nearly ten years. Of those sincerely willing to stop drinking about 50% have done so at once, 25% after a few relapses, and most of the remainder have improved. It is probable that half of our members, had they not been drinkers, would have appeared in ordinary life to be normal people. The other half would have appeared as more or less pronounced neurotics.

Alcoholics Anonymous or "AA", popularly so called, has but one purpose-one objective only-"to help other alcoholics to recover from their illness."

You can verify this as being printed in 1949 by the asterisk at the bottom of page 3 stating the numbers for AA membership in 1949.
